I’m greeted by Laura Howard, designer and owner of fashion label Saint, at the entrance of the historic woolsheds in Newcastle’s inner city suburb of Wickham. Newcastle’s own incubator of creatives and fashion labels.

I first came across Saint on instagram and just fell in love with its luxurious look, feel and simple elegant designs. A small capsule collection of luxury basics for your wardrobe with a delicious twist of lovely fabrications and perfect cuts and tailoring.

I DM’d Laura a few weeks ago hoping that we could meet & she could take me through her studio and design process and tell me how and when this label came to be!

Saint is going places and this will happen fast (watch this space).

Launching in early 2020 and then with COVID creeping in to change our lives, Laura decided to hold and officially launch the brand late 2020.

With a huge movement towards Australian made and shop local, the brand has already seen great success.

As I walk into Laura’s small but very typical design studio (in my work as a fashion editor I’ve had the privilege to be in the design studio’s of Australia’s best designers, Alex Perry, AJE, Carla Zampatti, Bianca Spender etc). Looking around I see so many bolts of lovely fabrics and a huge cutting table with a lovely pair of gold scissors laying on the table.

We chat about how she came to be in this industry. Her love of creative came from her mother, who she says curated all sorts of interesting creative outlets for Laura when she was young, from sewing barbie clothes, to making matching beaded doona and pillow sets for Brat doll beds. She fondly remembers being on holidays with her family and being bought a book of her choice for her holiday reading. She choose art or fashion books and so the inspiration began for a fashion designer to be.

Laura studied fashion design at Newcastle TAFE and then got a job at The Lair (another Newcastle gem of a label). She was offered the job of production manager of their studio. She was there for 4 years before she decided to fulfil her dream of becoming a fashion designer and started her own label Saint.

When I came across this label I loved everything about it! Not just the clothes but also how it was presented, the thought Laura put into the brand’s image and the audience she wants to capture.
