Inside ESSE Studios’ Quietly Powerful Return to AFW26
ESSE Studios returned to Australian Fashion Week with a collection that felt less about trend and more about intention. Titled The ESSE Editions, the Resort 2026 presentation continued Charlotte Hicks’ ongoing exploration of refined dressing, where restraint becomes the statement rather than the absence of one.
Against the backdrop of an industry constantly demanding more, faster and louder, ESSE Studios moved in the opposite direction. The runway was grounded in precision and permanence, offering a wardrobe built around clarity of form, considered construction and quiet confidence.
Rather than presenting standalone “fashion moments”, the collection unfolded as a complete wardrobe system, with each piece designed to work in conversation with another. Tailoring remained central, sharpened through elongated lines, sculptural silhouettes and softened structure that framed the body without overpowering it.
There was a controlled sensuality woven throughout the runway - not overt, but deliberate. Dresses skimmed the body with ease, outerwear carried architectural volume, and fluid separates balanced strength with softness. Every look felt purposeful, stripped of excess yet rich in detail and proportion.
The collection also reinforced ESSE Studios’ ongoing commitment to responsible production. With the vast majority of garments produced locally in Sydney through a network of specialised makers and artisans, craftsmanship remained at the forefront of the presentation. In many ways, the runway reflected a broader shift happening within Australian fashion, one where longevity, transparency and wearability are becoming just as important as visual impact.
There was also a sense of duality present throughout the collection. Strength and softness existed side by side, with sharply composed silhouettes softened through movement and fluid fabrication. The styling echoed this balance, reinforcing the idea of dressing not as performance, but as personal composition.
As Australian Fashion Week continues to evolve, ESSE Studios stands firmly within a growing conversation around conscious luxury - one that values precision over spectacle and permanence over noise. With The ESSE Editions, Charlotte Hicks delivered a collection defined not by excess, but by confidence in simplicity.
