Breakout star Sombr debuts new song “We Never Dated”
There’s something undeniably magnetic about Sombr. At just 19, the New York-born, LA-based singer, songwriter and producer is leading a new wave of emotionally charged alt-pop.
His latest release, We Never Dated, picks up where viral hits Back to Friends and Undressed left off. A sharp anthem for the situationship generation, the track leans into the unresolved, unlabelled grey area of modern love - equal parts ache and admission.
Sombr’s ascent has been nothing short of meteoric. Since sharing his first track online in 2021, he’s clocked up over 41 million monthly Spotify listeners, sold out his debut tour, and recently made his television debut on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon. His hits are not only climbing charts, they’re redefining what alt-pop sounds and feels like in 2025.
In Australia, the story is much the same. Back to Friends and Undressed currently sit at #3 and #4 on the ARIA Singles Chart, with streaming numbers soaring into the hundreds of millions. His December headline shows in Sydney, Brisbane and Melbourne sold out within minutes, and he’s set to light up the stage at Spilt Milk Festival across the country.
As Billboard puts it, Sombr’s music riffs on alt-rock hallmarks that have been absent from the mainstream for years. But more than nostalgia, he offers something fresh: a soundscape of honesty, vulnerability and cinematic scale. And right now, it feels like the whole world is listening.
