Rain Soaked Glamour at Carla Zampatti: Australian Fashion Week Night 1

There are few cities in the world that can deliver fashion theatre quite like Sydney. And on a rain-soaked evening at AFC Australian Fashion Week, Carla Zampatti reminded us exactly why.

Set against the glittering backdrop of Sydney Harbour, guests arrived beneath dark skies and threatening clouds, the Sydney Opera House across the water. What began as drizzle quickly turned into pouring rain. Yet somehow, it only added to the magic.

The house’s presentation, titled Reflections, felt cinematic from the very first look. Models emerged through the storm in liquid sequins, sharp tailoring and silhouettes that shimmered against the harbour. There was something deeply poetic about watching a collection centred on reflection unfold beneath an unpredictable Sydney sky.

Designed by Tanya Emon Beattie, the collection explored strength and softness in equal measure. One of the most striking sections of the runway leaned heavily into power dressing, a commanding procession of structured tailoring, exaggerated shoulder pads and sharp suiting that nodded to the enduring legacy of Carla Zampatti. Strong shoulders dominated the runway in a way that felt less retro revival and more modern armour; confident, unapologetic and impossibly chic.

Elsewhere, fluid eveningwear brought softness back into the story. Reflective embellishments and beadwork caught every flash of light and rainfall, creating movement that felt almost dreamlike. The contrast between precise tailoring and liquid glamour gave the collection its rhythm.

And then came the colour palette, perhaps one of the evening’s most memorable talking points. While the brand’s monochromatic DNA remained intact, bursts of lilac and rich cherry red injected a fresh sense of modernity into the collection. The pairing felt unexpected yet completely right for the season ahead: romantic but powerful, soft yet commanding. Against the grey skies and reflective harbour water, the colours looked even more striking.

The soundtrack, featuring iconic female voices including Kylie Minogue and Blondie layered with cinematic strings, only heightened the emotion of the show.

By the finale, guests were drenched, shoes ruined and completely captivated.

Sometimes the best fashion moments aren’t polished or perfect. Sometimes they happen under pouring rain, beside the harbour, wrapped in silk, sequins and shoulder pads, with the Sydney Opera House watching on in the background.
